2013 EuroBasket results: Ukraine improves to 3-0; Tony Parker, France beat Israel

After the first two days of EuroBasket 2013 featured all 24 teams playing a game each day, only Groups A and B returned to the courts in Slovenia on Friday. Here’s how the day’s results turned out:

Ukraine 88, Germany 83 - Sergii Gladyr scored 25 points as Ukraine moved to 3-0 in Group A play with an 88-83 victory over Germany. Eugene Jeter added 19 points and six assists in the winning effort.

After leading for much of the game and holding a nine-point cushion heading into the final frame, Ukraine found themselves in a tie game with 2:20 to play. But Gladyr came to the rescue, making two clutch baskets to create some separation. Germany got back to within three with 20 seconds left, but two Gladyr free throws helped seal the deal.

Ukraine shot a worse percentage than Germany, but they had twice the offensive rebounds and turned the ball over just six times, leading to 17 more shots. Both teams made 13 three-pointers.

Heiko Schaffartzik led Germany with 22 points and 11 assists, while Robin Benzing had 18 points. Germany fell to 1-2 in the tournament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina 76, Montenegro 70 - Bosnia and Herzegovina stormed back from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to upend Montenegro, 76-70, in a Group B contest. Brooklyn Nets forward Mirza Teletovic had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Bosnia and Herzegovina, who moved to 1-2 in EuroBasket.

Montenegro controlled much of the game, taking a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and extending it to 12 early in the final frame. Bosnia and Herzegovina then went on a 21-4 run to build a five-point lead before some last-minute free throws put the game away.

Both teams had shooting issues, with Montenegro struggling at 35.3 percent. Montenegro did pull down 22 offensive rebounds, but they weren’t able take full advantage.

Bojan Dubljevic paced Montenegro with 16 points and six rebounds. Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic was held to just six points and four rebounds. Montenegro dropped to 1-2 in the tournament.

Lithuania 67, Latvia 59 - Toronto Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Lithuania to a 67-59 victory on Friday against Latvia. Lithuania led by as many as 13 points a few minutes before the half, but Latvia would surge to tie the game at 45 apiece just six minutes into the second half. A response from Lithuania came in the form of a 7-0 burst from there, and the lead held to the end of the game.

Former Arizona State forward Rihards Kuksiks led Latvia with 13 points, but as a team, Latvia only shot 32.8 percent from the field while allowing Lithuania to shoot 46.9 percent.

Both teams are 2-1.

Belgium 76, Great Britain 71 - A competitive game saw two teams without great star power face off shot for shot, but in the end, Belgium’s ball movement gave it a 76-71 victory on Friday. Combining for 33 turnovers, it was Belgium’s 17 assists to Great Britain’s nine that alluded to a field goal shooting discrepancy of 48 percent to 38 percent in favor of Belgium.

The Belgians jumped out to a 14-4 lead less than four minutes into the game but over the next eight minutes Great Britain reeled their opponents in. Great Britain would take a seven-point lead just after halftime, but lead changes and ties -- 12 of each for the game -- made up most of the second half until Belgium pulled away.

Big man Sacha Massot paved the way with 15 points for Belgium, and Axel Herville, whose rights are owned by the Rockets, added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Daniel Clark led Great Britain with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Belgium is 2-1 and Great Britain is 1-2.

France 82, Israel 63 - France had this game won by the end of the third quarter with a 22-point lead. Israel managed to cut the point differential to 19 by outscoring France in the final quarter, 20-17. However, Israel couldn’t keep up with hot-shooting France, which finished with 57 percent of its shots made. Israel sank just 41 percent of its shots.

Alexis Ajinça led France with 13 points and six rebounds, and Spurs guard Tony Parker chipped in 12 points and seven assists. Parker was one of the few French players to not make more than half of his shots, but did shoot better than the whole Israeli team at 42.9 percent.

France improved to 2-1. Israel is winless in three games.

Macedonia 89, Serbia 75 - Macedonia jumped out to a 29-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and led by 25 when the game entered the fourth frame. Serbia managed to cut the deficit to 14 points by the final buzzer by scoring 30 points to Macedonia’s 19.

Macedonia’s Bo McCalebb led all scorers with 27 points, but he wasn’t a one-man show in the victory. Pero Antic added 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Vlado Ilievski also scored 16 points, 12 coming from beyond the arc.

Serbia’s Danilo Andujsic led his team with 19 points and was joined in the double-digit points club by Nemanja Bjelica (13) and Nemanja Nedovic (11). Nenad Krstic ended the game with nine points and 11 boards.

Macedonia picked up its first win, proving to 1-2, while Serbia fell to 2-1.
