NBA trade rumors: Pelicans shopping Eric Gordon, according to report

After failing to trade him this past offseason, the Pelicans are again looking to move Gordon.

The New Orleans Pelicans are looking to trade shooting guard Eric Gordon, according to Sean Deveney of Sporting News.

The Pelicans acquired Gordon from the Los Angeles Clippers just over two years ago and matched a four-year, $58 million offer sheet from the Phoenix Suns in the summer of 2012. Gordon struggled with injuries his first two seasons in New Orleans, and he was first put on the block this past offseason after the Pelicans acquired Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans.

When the Pelicans couldn’t find a trade partner, they hoped to have some success with a three-guard look of Gordon, Holiday and Evans. Gordon has stayed mostly healthy and that look has done well offensively, but there have been some serious issues on the defensive side of the ball.

Injuries have also contributed to the Pelicans' so-so start. Anthony Davis missed time with a broken hand, while Ryan Anderson has dealt with multiple injury issues, including a herniated disc that has him on the shelf indefinitely. And Friday morning, Jrue Holiday was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right leg.

Holiday’s injury could create more opportunities for Gordon, and in turn, up his trade value. The 25-year-old has played pretty well this season, averaging 15.6 points while shooting 43.9 percent overall and 38.5 percent from three on the year.

New Orleans would like to receive some frontcourt help back in a Gordon trade, specifically, a center to pair with Davis. However, it could be hard to find a taker for Gordon’s expensive contract.
