The Texas Legends of the NBA D-League plan to claim former North Carolina swingman P.J. Hairston off waivers, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears.
Texas Legends plan to claim P.J. Hairston
The former UNC standout is set to join the Mavericks’ D-League affiliate.

Hairston filed paperwork for eligibility in the D-League earlier in the week. The 21-year-old was booted off the North Carolina basketball team in December for breaking “impermissible benefits rules,” which stemmed from several driving incidents involving rental cars. He was also arrested on drug charges in July.
This move to the D-League is similar to what Glen Rice Jr. did after he was dismissed from Georgia Tech during the 2011-12 season. Rice excelled in the D-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, leading them to a title in 2013. Thanks to that stint, Rice was selected No. 35 overall in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Hairston is sure to enter the draft after this season, and he's hoping to see his stock rise like Rice's did. The Legends, who are the D-League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks, aren't all that committed to developing anybody on their roster, so there should be playing time available for Hairston.
