Cavaliers ‘highly unlikely’ to trade Andrew Bynum, per report

The Cleveland Cavaliers will probably have to waive center Andrew Bynum on Monday night to avoid having to pay him the rest of his $12 million salary this season, as trading the big man is now an unlikely outcome, according to Sean Deveney of the Sporting News:

The Cavaliers have explored deals for Bynum and his waive-able contract, most seriously with the Lakers for big man Pau Gasol, but have not yet come up with a suitable offer.

...

The Cavaliers had reportedly set a midnight deadline for a trade, but are still working to complete something in the 11th hour. A source told Sporting News, though, that such a scenario is, "highly unlikely at this point."

The Los Angeles Lakers are apparently trying to pry either Dion Waiters or a draft pick away from the Cavaliers, and Cleveland is not interested, via Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. If a Gasol deal is eventually completed, the Cavaliers would have to include at least one other player with Bynum to make it work.

If Cleveland has to waive Bynum, it would not be a totally disastrous situation. It would just mean that the Cavaliers took a $6 million risk and it didn’t work out. You can be sure that they will use the next few hours to continue to explore all possible options, though. Cleveland has lost eight of its last nine games and is 11-23 on the season, with the third-worst offense in the NBA. This team had playoff expectations, and it would help if the front office could make a Bynum trade that can help the team win now.
