Alec Burks signs 4-year, $42 million extension, according to report

The fourth-year Jazz guard was locked up just before the deadline for early extensions to be signed.

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

The Utah Jazz have agreed to a four-year, $42 million contract extension with guard Alec Burks that could get pushed to $45 million if certain incentives are reached, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The deal was done a little over 12 hours before the midnight Oct. 31 deadline.

Burks becomes the third young Jazz player to be locked up for the foreseeable future. The team signed Derrick Favors to a four-year, $49 million extension two summers ago that is just kicking in this year and matched a four-year, $62 million offer sheet for Gordon Hayward this summer. Utah is not expected to reach an agreement with Enes Kanter, who will become a restricted free agent next summer.

That's the fate Burks avoided by agreeing to this deal. The former lottery pick from Colorado averaged 14 points in 28 minutes per game off the bench with the Jazz last season, but has moved into the starting lineup alongside Hayward with the departure of Richard Jefferson. The Jazz are hoping he will be their starting shooting guard of the future, though the backcourt is crowded with Hayward, Trey Burke and first-round pick Dante Exum.
