NBA schedule 2014: Bulls and Raptors clash, Nets visit Warriors

The Chicago Bulls get a test against a hot Toronto Raptors squad.

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Rose’s controversial comments about his health may be the most-read headline, but sticking to the basketball court, an appealing Eastern Conference showdown begins the NBA’s four-game Thursday night slate.

The Bulls march north of the border with the resume of road warriors having won all four games away from Chicago so far.

Problem is, the Bulls' opponents in Toronto are off to a franchise-best start and have gone 5-0 at home. DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry have picked up where he left off last year, but the bench unit has given the Raptors a little more oomph than they had a season prior. Terrence Ross' development and the addition of Lou Williams have a lot to do with it.

Chicago’s schedule hasn’t exactly been difficult, and Tom Thibodeau’s defense will be tested against the league’s No. 3-ranked offense that’s putting up 109.1 points per 100 possessions.

The main course

Bulls vs. Raptors, 8 p.m. ET

Jimmy Butler will likely have his hands full corralling DeRozan, but the Bulls will also need Mike Dunleavy to survive against the freakish athleticism of Ross at the other wing spot. Pace will play a key role for keeping the Raptors' athletic perimeter trio in check. The Raptors would love to get in transition to unshackle themselves from the Bulls' halfcourt offense, and it helps that cause that Dwane Casey's squad is in the top-5 in both turnovers forced and fewest turnovers given up.

The appetizer

Kings vs. Grizzlies, 8 p.m. ET

Sacramento might be the surprise of the Western Conference so far. Wins over the Blazers, the Clippers and the Suns were followed by losses to an undermanned Thunder squad and the Dallas Mavericks. Visiting a 7-1 Memphis team will be a sturdy test for Mike Malone's squad. Will they add another telling victory to their resume or fall for the third time in a row?

The dessert

Nets vs. Warriors, 10:30 p.m. ET

The Nets looked like they had listened to Joe Johnson, who called out his teammates for playing selfishly heading into a Wednesday night matchup in Phoenix. Then, a 19-point lead was blown, and it was back to the drawing board again. Phoenix ran Brooklyn out of their game, and it doesn't bode well on a road back-to-back that finds Lionel Hollins' team in the Bay. The Warriors will be salty coming off consecutive losses to Phoenix and San Antonio that followed their NBA-best 5-0 start to the year.
