Is LeBron James telling Dwyane Wade they’ll reunite in this clip?

There’s no way, is there?

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Go watch the end of this video from Miami’s Christmas Day win over the Cavaliers, as first discovered by Heat Nation and then brought to the forefront by a Reddit user. Turn your headphones way up.

Upon a first listen, it sounds like incoherent mumbling. But if you listen carefully, it appears LeBron James is telling Dwyane Wade this:

“Listen, we’ve done it before. We’re gonna reunite again and do some better things, alright?”

It becomes clearer only if you listen for the words.

The obvious interpretation if that’s what was really said: James is foreshadowing an eventual return to Miami, presumably after just one season in Cleveland. This would be incredible given James’ very public return to Cleveland, but it also aligns with his oddly lethargic play and a recent report that “he won’t hesitate to make the appropriate business decision if it means bolting.” And a clearer version of the audio, posted by a different Reddit user, makes it sound like James actually said “if we aren’t better this year,” though that part’s harder to hear.

Now, James could have been referring to catching up with Wade off the court the next time he’s in town -- Cleveland played on Dec. 23 and perhaps the two didn’t have as much time to reunite on Christmas Eve before the game. The two could also be talking about a future collaboration, as Bleacher Report’s Ethan Skolnick notes:

And, of course, we must consider two other possibilities: they were joking in some capacity or James was especially frustrated with how the game and season has gone and said something he won’t carry out later, especially if Cleveland improves.

But ... well ... we’re just going to leave this here and let folks draw their own conclusions.

Update: James addressed the video and said it was “outlandish” to think he would leave and that the conversation with Wade was not about basketball, according to Joe Vardon.
