Grizzlies pick up Beno Udrih off waivers

The Memphis Grizzlies added point guard depth behind Mike Conley by picking up the former New York Knick.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Point guard Beno Udrih is headed to the Memphis Grizzlies, who picked up the veteran off waivers Wednesday, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

Sunday Shootaround

Udrih and forward Metta World Peace were bought out by the New York Knicks on Monday after expressing frustrations about playing time. Udrih had reportedly requested a trade, according to ESPN New York, but the Knicks failed to deal him before the Feb. 20 trade deadline.

Udrih is averaging 5.6 points and 3.5 assists per game this season. When the New York has been healthy he has played behind Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni, however.

Memphis' acquisition of the 31-year-old Slovenian gives it backcourt depth behind point guard Mike Conley. The Grizzlies have had trouble maintaining point guard depth over the last year or so. Last season, midseason signee Keyon Dooling became a key part of the rotation because of the lack of depth, and the team traded the more-apt-to-score Jerryd Bayless to the Boston Celtics this year in exchange for shooter Courtney Lee.

Nick Calathes, a 25-year-old player in his first NBA season, has been the backup to Conley thus far and is averaging 5.0 points and 2.7 assists per game. Udrih should bring a more-experienced presence to the position.
