Pistons targeting Lionel Hollins, according to report

Lionel Hollins interviewed with the Pistons, and he could be the team’s primary target as they look to replace Maurice Cheeks.

The Detroit Pistons fired head coach Maurice Cheeks just 50 games after hiring him, and their next target for their coaching position could be Lionel Hollins, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Hollins interviewed with the Pistons multiple times while the team decided on a replacement for Lawrence Frank last summer, but the team hired Cheeks instead.

Detroit Bad Boys: Mo Cheeks out in Detroit

Hollins was offered an assistant coaching position on Cheeks' staff but turned down the offer, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. The Memphis Grizzlies fired Hollins after he coached the team to a franchise-best 56 wins. They reached the Western Conference Finals, but were swept there by the San Antonio Spurs.

The Pistons have not announced an interim coach to fill-in for Cheeks, though current assistant coach John Loyer is expected to be the favorite for the position. Detroit is the first team to fire their head coach this season, giving the franchise a head start to speak with available head coaches before other teams are also in the market.
