New York’s possible D-League team names include Hutch, Empire

The “New York Empire” sounds super cool.

The New York Knicks' D-League team has several possible names already. The NBA D-League has filed for ownership of five names through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, according to Chris Herring of the Wall Street Journal.

The names are … drumroll … The New York Plainsmen, the New York Hutch, the New York 914s, the New York Empire and the New York ‘Bockers.

If you recall, the Knicks asked their fans to help them name the new team earlier this month. You can still do so by submitting a name here. They also said they “have a few ideas,” and I suppose the names listed above are those ideas. The trademark filings were submitted on March 7, three days before they held a press conference to officially announce the team and their plans to have fans help with the naming process.

Anyway, your reactions? Do you like the idea of cheering for both the Knicks and the ‘Bockers? I don’t, particularly. How about the 914s -- do you want to root for an area code? I’m usually not partial to non-pluralized team names, but I must say the New York Empire sounds like the best of the bunch to me.
