Russell Westbrook injury: MRI shows ‘no new issues’ with Thunder star’s knee

After bumping knees with Kyle Lowry on Friday, Westbrook appears to be alright going forward.

An MRI on the right knee of Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook revealed no new issues, reports Ken Berger of CBS Sports. He says it's still "status quo going forward" concerning minutes and back-to-backs for the three-time All-Star.

Westbrook left in the third quarter of OKC's game against the Raptors on Friday night after bumping knees with Toronto's Kyle Lowry. It was a scary situation for a player who has undergone three surgeries on that right knee since injuring it during the 2013 postseason.

The MRI offered up some good news, though, as Westbrook continues working back to 100 percent after the initial meniscus tear in his knee last year. Shaking the rust off from his game has been difficult after numerous procedures and some other setbacks, but he remains one of the league’s most productive players in spite of it all.

Over 37 games this season, Westbrook has averaged 21.2 points and seven assists per game. He’s shooting a career-high 4.7 three-pointers a night, though his minutes are down to a career-low 30.7 per game as the Thunder continue limiting his workload.

Oklahoma City plays Denver at home on Monday before visiting Dallas the following day. Scott Brooks has already said Westbrook won’t play in one of those games, but he didn’t reveal which one on Sunday, according to the Oklahoman’s Darnell Mayberry.
