The Cleveland Cavaliers signed guard Scotty Hopson on Monday, the team announced. Hopson spent most of the year playing for Anadolu Efes in Turkey. The unusual contract means he'll make $1.35 million for his services in the final few weeks of the season, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.

Cleveland used its room exception to sign Hopson, and the team will have a $1.45 million option for 2014-2015. This means that, when negotiating potential trades around June’s draft or in the offseason, the Cavaliers will have an extra asset for salary-matching purposes.
In all likelihood, Hopson won’t make that $1.45 million next season, but a team will be able to trade for him and then release him in order to save money. For his trouble, Hopson will receive quite the sweetheart deal for the remainder of the regular season in Cleveland.
The Cavaliers are 30-45 and are 2.5 games back of the eighth-place Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference standings.
