2014 NBA playoff standings: Many have clinched, few have set seeding

Never short on suspense, the NBA has waited until the last game of the season to set the final playoff standings in both conferences.

After much speculation toward the bottom of the Western Conference, Monday night's game between the Grizzlies and Suns finally laid to rest the question of who would make the postseason. Memphis came away with a victory, 97-91, in a playoff atmosphere.

However, the storyline picks right back up on Wednesday night as the Mavericks and Grizzlies duke it out to see who claims the No. 7 seed. The same can be said for the Clippers and Thunder, who are struggling against each other for the No. 2 spot and both play in games Wednesday. Los Angeles can jump Oklahoma City should they beat Portland and if the Thunder fall to the Pistons.

Houston and Portland are locked in at the Nos. 4 and 5 spots, respectively. They are slated to meet each other in the first round. Meanwhile, Golden State is firmly in the No. 6 spot waiting to see who falls between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City.

San Antonio is in control of the top seed in the West.

In the East, things are similarly jumbled. Indiana is locked in to the No. 1 spot after the Heat lost to the Wizards on Monday. Miami will take the No. 2 position and face the No. 7 seed.

Toronto is in control of the No. 3 seed, but have to win at New York on Wednesday if they want to be safe. Chicago has been challenging from the No. 4 position all month, and if the Raptors drop a game and the Bulls beat Charlotte, they could swap spots.

With Brooklyn losing to the Knicks on Tuesday night, they're on the brink of dipping out of the fifth spot. The Nets need to win Wednesday night's game against Cleveland to make sure the Wizards don't have a chance to leapfrog them.

Meanwhile Charlotte can move up to the No. 6 spot if they beat Chicago on Wednesday and Washington fumbles their game against Boston. The Atlanta Hawks are locked in to the No. 8 seed, and will face the Indiana Pacers in the first round.
