Knick rumors: Steve Kerr is the hottest name for the open head coach job

Steve Kerr, who has never coached at any level, is the hottest name on the rumor mill surrounding the Knicks’ new coaching vacancy.

The hottest name circulating around the new head coach vacancy with the New York Knicks is TNT broadcaster Steve Kerr. The sharpshooter who played under Phil Jackson in Chicago during the Jordan era said on Monday that he expects to speak with the Knicks' new president about the opening. From the New York Post:

“I do anticipate talking with Phil Jackson at some point,” Kerr said on his weekly radio show on SiriusXM. “But when that time comes, it will come. But for now there’s really not a whole lot to talk about. This is the NBA. Coaches basically know when they go in that they are likely to be fired. It’s a brutal business, it’s a brutal profession.”

Kerr spent 16 seasons in the NBA, winning five titles and spent three years as the general manager for the Phoenix Suns, leaving that post in 2010 to return to broadcasting. He's considered one of the top TV analysts in the league.

Howard Beck of Bleacher Report, however, reports that Kerr instead prefers to work on the West Coast. The Lakers job is expected to open up, and the Warriors could also be hiring a new coach.

Meanwhile, former Jackson assistant and one-time Mavericks head coach Jim Cleamons wants to work for the Knicks in any capacity, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.
