Warriors fire assistant coach Darren Erman for ‘violation of company policy’

GM Bob Myers says the firing isn’t a basketball move.

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Golden State Warriors have dismissed assistant coach Darren Erman for a "violation of company policy" unrelated to basketball, the team announced Saturday. GM Bob Myers said the move is not tied with the recent coaching staff shakeup involving Brian Scalabrine, who was re-assigned by request of head coach Mark Jackson.

Erman, from all appearances, was a rising star in NBA coaching circles. He’s been a key part of the Warriors’ coaching staff this season, helping lead the team to a likely playoff appearance with a 47-29 record.

Erman spent four years in Boston working with Tom Thibodeau and Doc Rivers before joining Jackson's staff in Golden State three years ago. It's been reported in the past that Jackson has butted heads with his assistants, including current Sacramento Kings head coach Michael Malone last year and Scalabrine this year, but Erman's never been mentioned.

That situation with Scalabrine turned some heads in the Bay Area given the odd timing, but star point guard Stephen Curry came to Jackson's defense this week. Speaking with ESPN's Marc Stein, he denied the claims of dysfunction surrounding the team. "Coach inspires every single person in this locker room," Curry told Stein.

Whatever Erman did reportedly does not require police involvement. All of it leads to the likelihood that this situation indeed has nothing to do with basketball, Jackson or any combination of the two, as Myers said. Whether we’ll find out any more remains to be seen.
