Joe Dumars will reportedly resign as Pistons president

The Joe Dumars era in Detroit is about to be over.

Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars intends to step down and it could happen this week, according to a report from the Detroit News' Vincent Goodwill:

Dumars has told multiple sources within the NBA that he plans to resign - possibly as soon as this week - after a busy offseason that included the signings of high-priced free agents Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings and led to an underachieving 2013-14 season.

There has been a feeling for a while that this would be Dumars' last season at the helm in Detroit, with the Pistons failing to make the playoffs this year and Detroit owner Tom Gores wanting to make his mark on the franchise. Dumars hired Maurice Cheeks as head coach before the season. According to Goodwill, it "became clear the two sides, bound together by circumstance, were headed for divorce," before Gores fired Cheeks in February. Dumars has been essentially silent with the media while the Piston played their way into the lottery.

Although Dumars built the beloved Pistons team that won the 2004 championship and stayed elite for four seasons, Detroit has suffered a rough six years since. The latter portion of Dumars' tenure will be remembered for the Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon signings, five different head coaches in six seasons and no above.-500 seasons. It definitely feels like time for a change.
