The NBPA’s slow search for an executive director will now be led by Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson.

Kevin Johnson will lead the National Basketball Players Association’s committee to search for a new executive director, the NBPA announced in a statement on Monday night. The Sacramento mayor and three-time All-Star will help the NBPA, which has been looking for Billy Hunter’s successor since last February, in its mission to find a new leader by the start of next season.

"Mayor Johnson is in a unique position as a former player and someone skilled in the politics of negotiations to lead this effort," Los Angeles Clippers point guard and NBPA president Chris Paul said in the statement. "We all witnessed his herculean efforts to save his hometown Sacramento Kings from relocating, and I'm confident he'll bring the same leadership to our search."

The union initially hoped to have someone in charge before Adam Silver took over from David Stern as NBA commissioner, but that did not come to pass. Reilly Partners, a search firm hired by the NBPA in September, will remain involved in the process, according to a report from Ken Berger of CBS.

“Over the next few weeks I will be meeting with all of the player representatives and moving aggressively to build on the work that’s been done,” Johnson said in the statement.

In addition, the NBPA announced that Atlanta Hawks forward Kyle Korver would join its executive committee and serve as its vice president.
