Terry Stotts agrees to contract extension with Trail Blazers, per report

After leading the Trail Blazers to a breakout season, coach Terry Stotts has been rewarded with a couple more years on his contract.

The Portland Trail Blazers and head coach Terry Stotts agreed to a two-year contract extension on Thursday, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. The news comes just days after the team was eliminated from the postseason by the San Antonio Spurs in the West semifinals.

In addition to having his option for the 2014-15 season exercised by the Trail Blazers, Stotts also received another two years on his contract. The final season is a team option, however, so the coach only has his contract guaranteed through the 2015-16 season.

Wojnarowski says Stotts’ agent, Warren LeGarie, and Trail Blazers GM Neil Olshey had been working on the deal, which was finalized Thursday.

Hired in 2012 by Portland after four years as an assistant under Rick Carlisle in Dallas, Stotts struggled in his first year as the Trail Blazers' coach, leading the team to a 33-49 record. There was a silver lining to the struggles, though, as point guard Damian Lillard broke out as a legitimate building block for the team.

Following an active offseason that saw management add depth to the core of Lillard, LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews, Stotts took the Blazers to 54 wins and the second round of the playoffs this spring. The first-round series win over Houston was Stotts' first as a coach.

Prior to joining Portland, Stotts had head coaching experience with the Hawks and Bucks. He was let go at both stops after failing to lead either team to a winning record. Overall, Stotts has a 201-245 record as an NBA head coach even after being 26 games above .500 this season.
