Mike Dunleavy, Byron Scott interview with Lakers, per reports
The Lakers are starting to ramp up their head coaching search now that the lottery has been completed, and Dunleavy and Scott are two of the first candidates.
Mike Dunleavy Sr. met with Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak on Wednesday morning to discuss the Lakers' open head coaching position, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. ESPN's Chris Broussard reports the Lakers have also talked to Byron Scott about the job.
The Lakers are starting to ramp up their head coaching search now that the NBA Draft lottery has concluded. Los Angeles was awarded the No. 7 pick in the upcoming draft.
Dunleavy has nearly 17 years of NBA coaching experience, and he began his coaching career with the Lakers in the 1990-91 season. Los Angeles won 58 games that year and went to the NBA Finals before losing to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls.
Dunleavy never made it to another NBA Finals, but he was named the NBA's Coach of the Year with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1999. The 60-year-old last coached in the NBA in 2010 with the Los Angeles Clippers, and he holds a .461 career regular-season winning percentage to go along with a 38-33 postseason record.
Scott also has Lakers ties, having spent the majority of his NBA playing career in purple and gold. Scott's coaching career began as an assistant in Sacramento before he took the head job with the New Jersey Nets in 2000. Scott guided the Nets to two consecutive NBA Finals, only to lose both times.
Scott was most recently the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he had very little success and was fired in 2013. Scott has a career regular-season winning percentage of just .444, but he's 33-24 in the postseason.
