Randy Wittman, Wizards close to contract extension, per report

After leading the Washington Wizards to their best record since 2004-05, coach Randy Wittman is on the brink of signing a three-year contract extension, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Wittman took over from Flip Saunders in the 2011-12 season after Saunders started an abysmal 2-15. Wittman, who previously served as head coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers, had struggled through a career with no playoff appearances. He was finally able to break through this past season with the Wizards, when the team ended its five-year postseason drought and finished the franchise's second-best record since the1978-79 team that lost in the NBA Finals.

Washington wasn't a one-hit wonder this year, and its future looks bright enough to keep Wittman around for a while. In a year that saw the Wizards easily upset the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, the team has finally built up a solid supporting cast around superstar point guard John Wall. Nene, Marcin Gortat, Trevor Ariza and Trevor Booker all proved to be capable veterans, but the big story was the emergence of Bradley Beal, who built on an All-Rookie Team performance last year to average 17.1 points per game.
