Newly-appointed Detroit Pistons coach and president Stan Van Gundy has agreed to hire Jeff Bower as his general manager, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

Bower, who will leave his position as the head coach of Marist College, has two stints in the NBA as a general manager of the Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets franchise in 2002-03 and then from 2005-2010. He joined the Hornets in 1995 as a scout and remained with the team through the 2009-2010 season. He and Van Gundy are good friends, and the hire will place the majority of the front office duties on Bower.

Though Van Gundy will ultimately have the final say, he obviously won’t be able to give enough attention toward scouting and learning the intricacies of the collective bargaining agreement while also coaching the team. Bower is immediately expected to work the Pistons through the draft, where they own the 38th overall pick. This offseason, he will also take charge in forward Greg Monroe’s restricted free agency.

San Antonio assistant general manager Scott Layden, former Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith and former league executive Stu Jackson were also reportedly in the mix for the general manager position.
