NBA Draft
Payton left Louisiana Lafayette following his junior season. After producing averages of 19.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game, he is one of the more mysterious point guard prospects in the draft. He was projected to be picked much lower, but rose after a series of impressive workouts.
Payton stands 6’3.75 in shoes and at 185 pounds uses a wiry strength on the defensive end, where he impressed with 2.3 steals per game in his final college go-around. A smooth ball handler, the point guard was asked to carry a big load for the Ragin’ Cajuns.
At times, Payton flourished against elite competition. At other points, he struggled with turnovers. His lack of a jump shot could hurt him but Payton does have the handles and a smoothness about him that should allow him to get to the rim or create for others.
