2014 NBA Draft Results: San Antonio Spurs select Kyle Anderson with 30th pick

Anderson, listed at 6’8.5 and equipped with a 7’2.75 wingspan, has a peculiar blend of ball handling, passing and rebounding. He averaged 8.8 rebounds and 6.5 assists in his sophomore season, playing a more central role as the team’s lead playmaker. He has a very good inside-out game, as he can post up smaller defenders and work his way past bigger ones.

How he will be used in the NBA is still up in the air. He’s much more effective with the ball in his hands, but he has to learn how to work off the ball. He shot 48 percent from three last season, but he only shot 58 times from beyond the arc and the small sample size may have worked in his favor.

Defense is a question mark as well. He averaged 1.8 steals per game, but he struggled to stay in front of quicker opponents and he isn’t strong enough to bang with stronger guys in the post.

Anderson is the third UCLA Bruin to go in the 2014 Draft and will give the Spurs a versatile player off the bench who can succeed at the guard or forward. San Antonio was one of the best offensive teams in the league last season and Anderson will only help as someone who can feed the ball to the Spurs’ established bigs or take some of the pressure off of players like Manu Ginobili.
