Las Vegas Summer League 2014: Doug McDermott, Dennis Schroder shine Sunday

McDermott and Schroder both broke the 30-point barrier on Sunday.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Sunday marked the third day of the Las Vegas Summer League, and there were several standout performances among the group. Let’s take a look at all the action.

Chicago Bulls 103, Denver Nuggets 76

The Bulls and Nuggets made a trade on draft night, with Chicago trading up to get Doug McDermott. The Creighton star enjoyed a monster performance against Denver on Sunday, pouring in 31 points on just 12 shots in a blowout victory for Chicago. McDermott made 5-of-9 shots from long range and knocked down all 12 of his free throws:

Gary Harris, who was selected with one of the picks included in the McDermott trade, shot just 1-of-12 from the field after scoring 33 points in his first Summer League game. Tony Snell added 23 points for Chicago. Quincy Miller had 26 points in the losing effort.

D-League Select 94, Atlanta Hawks 92 (2OT)

While the Hawks lost in a crazy sudden death double-overtime, they had to be pleased with the performance of Dennis Schroder. The second-year guard had 30 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go along with four assists. The eight turnovers were a blemish, but it was a mostly positive day for the youngster. 2014 first-round pick Adreian Payne had 10 points and seven rebounds. Tony Mitchell had 20 points for the D-League Select squad.

Cleveland Cavaliers 82, San Antonio Spurs 70

No. 1 pick Andrew Wiggins struggled in the win, scoring 13 points on 3-of-11 shooting. But Wiggins did put on a show in warm-ups:

2013 No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett fared better than Wiggins, scoring 13 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Will Cherry led the Cavs with 21 points. Deshaun Thomas had 21 points to lead San Antonio. Spurs first-round pick Kyle Anderson laid an egg, scoring just two points on 1-of-7 shooting.

New Orleans Pelicans 90, Los Angeles 73

Courtney Fells had 25 points to lead the Pelicans to an easy victory. DeQuan Jones added 14 points off the bench. Lakers first-round pick Julius Randle had a rather non-descript game, scoring 10 points and grabbing only two rebounds. Second-round pick Jordan Clarkson had a strong showing, putting up 16 points.

Sacramento Kings 72, Charlotte Hornets 65

In a rather ugly game, the Kings came out victorious. Ben McLemore had 11 points for Sacramento, while rookie Nik Stauskas had 10 points. Ra'Shad James led the way with 12 points. Hornets rookie P.J. Hairston had 22 points to lead all scorers, but he shot just 6-of-20 and missed all seven two-pointers he attempted. Noah Vonleh had 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting and grabbed 18 boards.

Portland Trail Blazers 75, Houston Rockets 67

C.J. McCollum had 19 points as all five Trail Blazers starters scored in double figures in the victory. Thomas Robinson had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Rockets second-round pick Nick Johnson had a solid game, scoring 16 points.

Phoenix Suns 93, Milwaukee Bucks 82

Seth Curry had 26 points to lead the Suns to a win. Curry shot 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from long range. 2013 first-round pick Archie Goodwin scored 17 points in the victory. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nate Wolters both had 16 points for Milwaukee. No. 2 overall pick Jabari Parker had 11 points and 11 rebounds, but he shot just 4-of-15 and got stuffed at the rim by Miles Plumlee:

Wizards 62, Timberwolves 55

Glen Rice Jr. got the Wizards off to a strong start with 13 points in the first quarter and Washington held on to win the low-scoring contest. Rice finished with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Otto Porter Jr. chipped in 11 points and five rebounds. Alexey Shved scored 16 for the Timberwolves while first-round pick Zach LaVine finished with 11 points on 2-of-8 shooting. Minnesota didn’t shoot the ball well, making just 2-of-13 attempts from long range.
