The NBA's regular season might not tip off with the San Antonio Spurs receiving their championship rings in front of their home crowd. According to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, rumor has it that the Spurs could open 2014-15 by visiting the Cleveland Cavaliers in LeBron James' return.

In recent years, the league has opened the year with a TNT-televised broadcast, ring ceremony included. But commissioner Adam Silver might operate differently than his predecessor, David Stern.
It would absolutely make sense for the NBA to kick things off with James’ home debut. After all, his decision to return to Cleveland pushed a strong offseason, Silver’s first in his current post.
From a pure basketball standpoint, there is probably not a better option, either. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is the longest-tenured head coach in the league, and he would be first up in trying to stop new Cavs coach David Blatt, who built his reputation overseas as being adaptable and innovative.
There’s still about a month for the NBA to tinker with the schedule, according to Washburn, but a Spurs-Cavs matchup would probably be a ratings boon.
