Charlotte Hornets point guard Kemba Walker will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, the team announced. Walker has missed three of the Hornets’ last five games with what the team was calling a cyst. He has been dealing with pain in the knee since high school.

There’s no timetable given yet for Walker’s return to the lineup, but most expect him to be out for at least six weeks. The Hornets are already reportedly looking at options from outside the organization:

Charlotte has been surging lately, winning nine of its last 11 games. The Hornets have climbed into a battle for the No. 8 playoff seed in the East with the Brooklyn Nets, where they currently hold a half-game lead. Charlotte and Brooklyn have also been talking about a potential trade that would swap Joe Johnson and Lance Stephenson as the headlining move.

Walker, 24, has been solid for Charlotte throughout the season after signing a $48 million extension before the start of the year. He’s averaging a career-high 18.8 points per game, while chipping in 5.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds. While the per-game numbers are nice, his scoring efficiency has remained low. Walker is shooting just 39.9 percent from the field and 32 percent from the three-point line.
