Fantasy basketball advice: NBA FanDuel sleepers/busts for Wednesday, Jan. 28

The January 28 schedule features 11 games, which means plenty of options for NBA FanDuel action. Sign up at FanDuel to start earning a deposit bonus.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

First off, a quick introduction, though if you don’t know what FanDuel is, well, you’re missing out. FanDuel is a site that offers daily fantasy sports games. Participants are given a chance every day to select new players, fill out a lineup and, most importantly, win some cash. If you choose poorly on Monday you can come back on Tuesday and try again. Essentially, it’s sport gambling but one hundred percent legal. So yeah, you should be signing up.

As for what we're going to be doing in this space -- the goal here will be to direct your attention towards some players that you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filing out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the Basketball Gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're hear for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for Wednesday's games. Tuesday night is generally a slower one in the NBA, while Wednesdays are always packed (there are 11 games slated for this Wednesday). So with that, let's get started.

3 below-the-radar players to target

Al Jefferson, F/C, Charlotte Hornets: Yes, you just read a paragraph detailing how this space was going to be used for the purpose of telling you about players you might not be aware of, but there's a reason Jefferson is being listed here. Actually, there are a few. Jefferson is averaging 13 points and seven rebounds per game since returning from a groin injury that kept him out of the lineup for nine games. He's also come off the bench and played just 25 minutes per game over that four-game stretch. The translation of all this is that Jefferson is currently being undervalued. He's capable of much more, and now that Kemba Walker is out on the lineup there's a good chance the Hornets go back to leaning on him. His Wednesday night matchup against the Spurs and Tim Duncan is a tough one, but look for Hornets coach Steve Clifford to give Big Al more minutes and touches to make up for Walker's absence.

Eric Gordon, G, New Orleans Pelicans: A similar case to Jefferson. With Jrue Holiday out with a leg injury, Gordon has been given a bigger role in the Pelicans' offense. In the seven games since Holiday went down Gordon is averaging 16 points, five assists and four rebounds, a major uptick from the 12 points, three assists and two rebounds he's averaging on the season. Gordon has also been hitting two three-pointers per game over this stretch. As an added bonus, the Pelicans are playing the Nuggets on Wednesday night, one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Denver has the ninth worst defensive rating in the NBA, and, according to HoopsStats.com, is allowing opposing shooting guards to score 23 points per game. He might not be a sleeper in the classic sense, but Gordon is a great mid-level buy. His teammate, Tyreke Evans, is a good player to look at, too. But Gordon will cost a little less, which will give you more cash to spend in other areas.

Jared Sullinger, F, Boston Celtics: Somebody's got to put up numbers for the Celtics, and it looks that somebody right now is Jared Sullinger. The 22-year-old forward has been averaging 18 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and one three-pointer per game over his last five contests and Monday night he'll get to take some swings against Minnesota's leaky defense. The Timberwolves are allowing opponents to score 110 points per 100 possessions, the worst mark in the league, and power forwards have killed them all year. Grab Sullinger for Wednesday night and use the extra cash to snag one of Oklahoma City's stars.

3 players to stay away from

Kawhi Leonard, F, Spurs: Leonard has been fantastic since coming back from injury. Not just in a Spurs-ian way, but in the box score, too. He's been scoring, rebounding, stealing the ball and hitting shots from deep. If you want to continue to ride him, go ahead. Just know this: over the past ten games no team has a better defensive rating than the Hornets, who the Spurs play Wednesday night. Charlotte also has been rebounding the ball like crazy over this stretch, and, in Michael Kidd-Glicrhist, the Hornets have one of the few players in the league who can physically matche up with Leonard. Kawhi is great, but on this night go with someone else.

D.J. Augustin, G, Detroit Pistons: Don't fall for the trap. Yes, Augustin is now the Pistons' starting point guard since Brandon Jennings is out for the year. And yes, Augustin did go for a ridiculous 35 points in his first start in Jennings' absence, Sunday night against the Raptors. And yes, Augustin was fantastic last season in Chicago when he was thrown into the starting lineup in place of the injured Derrick Rose. All this is true. The thing is, this is a value play. Augustin is not going to come cheap. His matchup against the Sixers is not a great one -- Philadelphia is better defensively than many realize -- and he's going to be the guy that most owners target as their cheap, sleeper player. You won't separate yourself by going with Augustin, and you probably won't get the production you pay for either. Augustin is solid, but there's a reason he's been a career backup. You're better off spending a bit more and getting someone better. Another 30-point performance is not on the way.

Rajon Rondo, G, Dallas Mavericks: There's weird stuff going on with Rondo in Dallas, which, given that this is Rajon Rondo, probably should not come as much of a surprise. The latest came Friday night, when Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle decided to bench Rondo for the final 5:12 of what turned out to be a close loss to the Bulls. The Mavericks will also be facing the Rockets, one of the league's best defensive teams. Between Patrick Beverly hounding him out on the perimeter, and Dwight Howard closing off everything in the paint, Wednesday night is likely going to be a tough one for Rondo. Stay away.

Other notables for Wednesday’s games

If you're looking for some really cheap production, Knicks guard Langston Galloway could help you out. Galloway is far from a star, but someone on that team has to get numbers. Galloway is averaging 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal and 1.5 three-pointers per game... Speaking of the Knicks, they play the Thunder Wednesday night. if you are looking to spend big on one or two stars, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook could put up huge lines against New York's D-League squad... Only seven teams in the NBA allow more made three-pointers per game than the Brooklyn Nets. The Brooklyn Nets play the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. Kyle Korver is on the Atlanta Hawks. Enough said... John Wall is great, but his Wednesday matchup against the Suns could be a tough one for him. Washington is going to rely on Wall to slow down Phoenix's three-headed monster of Eric Bledsoe, Goran Dragic and Isaiah Thomas. He can do it, but it could end up taking away from his stats on the other end of the floor.
