Good morning. Let’s basketball.
We all know why Mike Miller chose Denver
Good morning. That theory and more in Thursday’s NBA newsletter.

NOT JUST ANOTHER CURRY: Wonderful Jason Buckland profile of Seth Curry, who finally landed a guaranteed NBA contract (with the Kings) this offseason. Given that Seth is quiet and reserved, it’s never been easy to get at what he really thinks about his relative lack of success compared to that of his older brother. This piece does a good job of piercing that bubble.
PREVIEWS! Professor Flannery and I talk about how much time the Grizzlies have left and where they rate in the bolstered West. Here’s Grizzly Bear Blues’ preview. Flanns and I disagree about the fate of the Heat, to an extent: he thinks they’ll be really good, and I’m not confident in that prediction. Here’s Hot Hot Hoops’ take. More previews coming Thursday and Friday and for the next two weeks!
VINSANITY IS FOREVER: Vince Carter is 38 and can still jump way higher than almost everyone.
NICE: The NBA will assign refs to the Replay Center so that some routine review calls can be made there, meaning on-court refs won’t need to visit the old monitors so frequently. Replay has been a boon for the NBA, and while it often seems like it takes forever, data provided by the NBA shows that most reviews are handled quickly. This will ensure some calls are handled even more quickly, unless those refs at the Replay Center are watching The Voice instead of Nets-Hornets.
ON THAT NOTE: When is the NBA going to pull a sponsor for the Replay Center? Where you at, electronics companies?
THE COOLEST BROTHER: NBA vet Dorell Wright shares a letter with his younger brother Delon (a rookie with the Raptors) on The Players’ Tribune about how to survive in the NBA. This is so awesome. And of course the biggest takeaway is to avoid the card games.
SO: The Nuggets signed Mike Miller. The Nuggets are expected to be pretty bad. Mike Miller is near the end of his career. Miller actually took a buyout from Portland to sign with Denver; he could get paid to stay at home this season. But he’s choosing to move to Denver in the year 2015. This would make total sense if the NBA didn’t still have certain testing protocols. Perhaps Mike Miller knows some people who know some people?
ON LARRY BROWN: Joe Posnanski shares three stories that capture the bizarre essence of Larry Brown, basketball savant-slash-lunatic. Via REDEF.
TY LAWSON IS TALKING ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Seems like a good idea, in my opinion.
NOT JUST FROZEN WATER: John Schuhmann presents data showing how effective icing the pick-and-roll -- forcing the ballhandler out of the middle of the court toward the sideline -- was last season. I wonder if the counter will be more top-of-the-key P&Rs or feints.
ALTERNATE JERSEY ALERT: The Wizards are repping Baltimore in some interesting numbers with off-center vertical stripes.
THIS WILL BE INTERESTING: Tom Thibodeau is sitting a season out for the first time since 1991. Here’s what life is like now, courtesy of Steve Aschburner.
THE BREANNA STEWART DRAFT: The WNBA held their draft lottery on Wednesday, and the Seattle Storm lucked out by winning No. 1 and the right to draft Breanna Stewart, who is awesome.
HEY MAN: Jabari Parker a) took a drawing class at some point in his high school or college career and b) paid attention! Good on him.
THIS IS MIKHAIL PROKHOROV SHOWING OFF HIS AMAZING BASKETBALL SKILLS. I could not do any of that. Apparently neither can the Brooklyn Nets.
Happy Thursday. See you next time.
