Rockets, Terrence Jones fail to agree to contract extension

The versatile power forward will become a restricted free agent next offseason.

The Houston Rockets and Terrence Jones will not agree to an early contract extension before the Oct. 31 deadline, reports Yahoo Sports’ Sham Charania. Jones will now become a restricted free agent and have the chance to take offer sheets from other teams next summer.

When healthy, Jones, who was taken by the Rockets with the 18th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, is an integral part of Houston’s rotation. He can take over a game -- Jones had a 36-point, 11-rebound game in January 2014 -- but he has struggled with injuries, missing 49 games last season. He was healthy for the playoffs, however, and averaged 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in 23.6 minutes per game as the Rockets advanced to the Western Conference Finals.

Jones often split time with Donatas Motiejunas, who missed the playoffs last season with a back injury. Motiejunas will miss the beginning of the 2015-16 season, but is expected to return to the court soon. He, like Jones, was also up for an extension but didn't receive one.

By not extending Jones now, the Rockets will have to worry about the offers Jones might have received as an influx of money rushes in with the TV deal and salary cap in the summer of 2016.
