Blake Griffin showed the complete package against the Kings

Don’t ever say Blake Griffin is just a dunker. His season-opening performance against the Kings further drives that point home.

In his first game of the season, Blake Griffin proved why his name belongs on the short list for possible MVP candidates. He destroyed Sacramento's defense to the tune of 33 points on 20 shots to go with four assists, leading the Clippers to a key road win.

Griffin really showed off his versatility in this game. Kings coach George Karl put the bigger Kosta Koufos on him to start the game and Griffin destroyed him by hitting jump shots that the plodding center didn't venture out to contest. When Koufos did, Griffin used his speed to drive around him and finish at the rim.

Rudy Gay was the next King to take a crack at stopping the Clippers' star. Griffin responded by taking the smaller Gay to the post and involving him on pick-and-rolls, which Gay has little experience defending as a power forward.

Ultimately, Griffin scored from everywhere on the floor except beyond the three-point line and was as devastating as ever near the basket.

By now, everybody knows Griffin is more than just a dunker, but many still don’t appreciate the depth of his offensive skills. He’s worked tirelessly on his jump shot and has become one of the most dangerous pick and pop threats in the league. His perimeter game is not limited to shooting, as he can also handle the ball like a guard and knows how to recognize and exploit cracks in the defense.

A 6’9 power forward shouldn’t be able to do that.

Anthony Davis is the best power forward in the game right now, but Griffin isn't far behind. His development from dunking machine to all-around offensive force has been exhilarating to watch. Now, at the peak of his powers, he forms a one-two punch with Chris Paul that rivals any other in the league.

With Griffin playing at this, the Clippers are definitely a contender for an NBA title.
