As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Tuesday night is generally a slower one in the NBA, while Wednesdays are always packed. So with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
J.J. Barea, G, Mavericks: Rajon Rondo was already out with a broken face, but on Monday Monta Ellis went down too. He's doubtful for Dallas' Wednesday game against the Jazz, which means J.J. Barea is pretty much the only creator the Mavericks have left. That will mean lots of high pick-and-rolls and opportunities for him. Go with Barea at point guard and save some cash for a more shallow position like shooting guard.
David Lee, F, Warriors: A similar case to Barea. Lee will likely see an uptick in minutes Wednesday after Warriors starting power forward Draymond Green sprained his ankle Monday night against the Sixers. That's Good Sign No. 1. Good Sign No. 2: The Warriors will be playing the lowly Timberwolves, a team that can't guard anyone (Minnesota is surrendering an NBA-high 106.3 points per game), which will likely lead to Green being given the night off, even if the injury isn't very serious. We know Lee can play, and put up numbers if given the opportunity. Wednesday night he will be, and you should take advantage.
Jeff Teague, G, Hawks: Teague is averaging 21 points, seven assists and two steals over his last five games. Over that stretch he's also shooting a red-hot 54 percent from the field. You can't ask for more from a point guard. That he'll be going up against the Celtics, a team giving up 102.6 points per game, the sixth worst number in the league, will only help matters. Boston also likes to play fast (third in the NBA in Pace, according to NBA.com), which means more possessions for the Hawks and Teague. If you're not confident in Barea then go with Teague instead of breaking the bank on a guy like Russell Westbrook.
3 players to avoid
Deron Williams, G, Nets: Williams came back from a rib injury five games ago and... has done absolutely nothing since. Over that stretch he's averaging seven points, five assists and three rebounds per game. Making matters worse is that he's been coming off the bench while the man starting ahead of him, Jarrett Jack, has been balling. Williams has been dealing with an illness of late, which could explain some of his struggles. But stay away from him until he proves that he can be a productive player on the court.
Spencer Hawes, F/C, Clippers: Hawes was a sexy pick-up after Blake Griffin went down with an injury, but opportunity doesn't always lead to production. Hawes had just four points Monday against the Mavericks. He's struggled with his shot all year (shooting 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from deep) and could have trouble matching up against the fast-paced Rockets on Wednesday. The Griffin injury could end up helping Hawes, but take a wait-and-see approach first before you go spending money on him.
Eric Gordon, G, Pelicans: Ignore Gordon's last game (31 points Monday against the Jazz) and instead take a look at his previous three (18 points combined). Yeah, with all the injuries New Orleans is dealing with he's getting the ball a lot more, but his game does have a ceiling. Some guys are not meant to be The Guy, and Gordon is one of them. He'll also be facing the Pacers on Wednesday. Indiana has one of the league's best defenses, and knows how to scheme against a gunner like Gordon. Wednesday is not a time to go with the former Hoosier.
Other notables
As mentioned above, the Warriors are playing the Timberwolves on Wednesday. Also as mentioned above, the Timberwolves can't guard anyone. Klay Thompson is a great guy to spend big on, especially considering he's at a shallow position. Stephen Curry will likely have a big game, too... The Lakers can't stop point guards, and they'll be facing Damian Lillard on Wednesday... Josh Smith continues to be great for the Rockets... D.J. Augustin is averaging 21 points, nine assists, one teals and two three-pointers in seven games since Brandon Jennings went down with a season-ending Achilles injury.
