LeBron James has famously never been in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. While Michael Jordan’s dunk contest appearances helped forge his legend, James has time and again opted not to participate, and in 2012, he ruled out a potential future appearance.
LeBron James expresses regret at never entering Slam Dunk Contest
LEBRON YOU CAN STILL DO THE DUNK CONTEST IT’S NOT TOO LATE YOU’RE NOT DEAD YET PLEASE DO IT
So Saturday, at All-Star media availability, Dwyane Wade asked LeBron about the event -- and James said he rued earlier decisions to sit the contest out.
It was handily transcribed by Pro Basketball Talk:
It’s been some years where I said I was going to do it and didn’t do it. And then actually watching the dunk contest, I was mad at myself, because I believe it would have been great.
Now, at this point, I’m over the hill now. You ain’t going to see my no time soon. It’s over with.
LEBRON. WE NEED TO TALK. YOU’RE ONLY 30. YOU ARE NOT YET OVER THE HILL.
LOOK AT THESE THINGS YOU DID IN THE HEAT PRACTICE FACILITY. LOOK AT THIS INCREDIBLE THING YOU DID IN LAYUP LINES TWO YEARS AGO. LOOK AT THESE THINGS YOU DID IN WARMUPS.
Even if 30-year-old LeBron is not as good at dunking as 25-year-old LeBron was, 30-year-old LeBron is still one of the most explosive dunkers of all time, and would probably win the dunk contest in a landslide. DO THE DUNK CONTEST, LEBRON. PLEASE.
