As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Wednesday, March 11. Tuesday night is generally a slower one in the NBA, while Wednesdays are always packed. So with that, let's get started.
3 Players to target
Kenneth Faried, F, Nuggets: The Nuggets have a new coach, and suddenly Kenneth Faried is good again. Funny how that goes sometimes. Since Melvin Hunt took over for the now-fired Brian Shaw five games ago, Faried is averaging 15.0 points, 11.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.6 blocks in 32.2 minutes per game. Those are all huge jumps over his season averages (11.5 points, 8.8 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.7 blocks in 27.4 minutes per game). Whatever is going on here -- scheme, effort, something else -- Faried is now playing as well as he ever has. Atlanta, who Denver plays on Wednesday, is a tough matchup. But right now it's worth riding the Faried train until it slows down.
Nikola Mirotic, F, Bulls: This is why the Bulls traded for and signed the big man from Serbia. With Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler now out of the Bulls lineup, Mirotic has stepped up and filled the scoring void. He's averaging 20.8 points over his last six games, to go along with 8.0 rebounds. The Bulls are leaning on him now and, as a result, Mirotic's minutes have climbed over the 30-minute mark. He's only going to get more comfortable in this role as time goes on. His Wednesday matchup against the lowly Sixers, who are allowing opposing forwards to score 39.4 FanDuel points per game -- the fourth-highest number in the league (via Rotoworld) -- is only going to help matters.
Nerlens Noel, C, Sixers: The caveat here is that Noel has been dealing with a shin injury and is questionable for Wednesday. BUT, if he does play, he's someone who should certainly be on your FanDuel roster. Over his last five games Noel is averaging 11.2 points and 12.0 rebounds. But that's not the exciting part. What is, you ask? How about the 3.6 steals and 2.0 blocks per game he's also averaging over that stretch. Take a look at those numbers again -- they're crazy. Noel has been playing 35.2 minutes per game in his last five and it seems as if the Sixers are ready to ride him and let him develop on the court. Yeah, the massive front line of the Bulls, who the Sixers play on Wednesday, could present a difficult matchup. But if Noel continues to get 30-plus minutes per game, who he's playing won't matter.
3 Players to avoid
Mo Williams, G, Hornets: This has nothing to do with Williams but rather his situation, in this case being the impending return of Kemba Walker. Williams' recent awesomeness has been covered a lot in this space, so there's no need to go into it again. But by rejoining the Hornets, the problems that Walker could present for Williams' fantasy value are pretty obvious. That's not saying that this situation can't work. But it's definitely worth monitoring first before deciding to spend the amount that it will cost to put Williams in your lineup on Wednesday. Of course, if Walker decides to sit out Charlotte's game against the Kings you should feel free to play Williams.
Kyle Korver, G, Hawks: Korver has really struggled over his last five games, as he's shooting just 29 percent from the field, and downtown. That has translated to a grand total of 7.0 points in 33.4 minutes per game over that stretch. Of course Korver is one of the best shooters in the world, and in history, but even the best go through slumps. Until he fully ends his you'll want to avoid him at all costs.
Chris Paul, G, Clippers: Paul scored just two points in 30 minutes on Monday and appears to be dealing with a knee injury. Unfortunately for him, the Clippers are depleted right now, which means Paul can't take games off. That's a bad recipe for his matchup Wednesday against the Thunder and Basketball God Russell Westbrook, who's athleticism always gives the older Paul problems.
Other Notables
The Heat have been dealing with a ton of injuries, which has given guys like Michael Beasley and Tyler Johnson the opportunity to play. It's impossible to say at this point who to target, but pay attention to the team's injury report for its Wednesday night game against the Nets. There could be some great value plays there ... Only three teams give up more FanDuel points per game to opposing guards than the Minnesota Timberwolves. On Wednesday they play the Suns. Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight are guards who play for the Suns. You get the picture ... Magic guard Victor Oladipo is averaging 26.4 points, 5.8 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals over his last five games.
