As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Wednesday, April 1. Tuesday night is generally a slower one in the NBA, while Wednesdays are always packed. So with that, let's get started.
3 Players to target
DeMar DeRozan, G, Raptors: DeRozan is coming off one his best games of his career, a 42-point, 11-rebound effort Monday against the Rockets. With Kyle Lowry out, Toronto has turned to DeRozan to carry it into the playoffs, and the fifth year guard is responding. He's averaging 22.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists over his past five games. The Raptors face the Timberwolves on Wednesday, a team that has struggled containing opposing shooting guards all season. The 38.7 FanDuel points that they're allowing them to score per game is the fourth-worst mark in the league, per Rotoworld. It's also unlikely Lowry returns for this game, which means we can expect DeRozan to go off, again.
Zach LaVine, G, Timberwolves: We'll stay in this Raptors-Timberwolves game, only now it's time to take a look at the other team. Ricky Rubio's ankle injury has thrusted Lavine into Minnesota's starting lineup, and the rookie guard is showing why he was a first round pick. He's averaging 16.8 points, 4.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds over his last 10 games. Lavine, assuming Rubio continues to sit out, is as good a low-cost option as you'll find.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, G, Pistons: OK, scratch that last sentence from above, this guy might be an even better one. It's been a rough season for Detroit, but KCP's emergence as a capable wing scorer does give the Pistons at least something to look forward to next season. He's averaging 17.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.8 steals over his last five games. Caldwell-Pope is the perfect guy to go with if you don't want to break the bank on a someone like Derozan. Oh, he's also playing the Hornets on Wednesday, who have allowed opposing shooting guards to score 33.7 FanDuel points per game over their last 10 games, the sixth-worst number in the league over that stretch, per Rotoworld.
3 Players to avoid
Michael Carter-Williams, G, Bucks: Stay away, far away! Here are MCW's numbers since joining the Bucks in February: 13.4 points per game, 5.4 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals in 30.5 minutes per game. Not that bad, right? Well, here are his efficiency numbers (Warning, some readers may find the following stats highly disturbing): 39 percent shooting from the floor, 11 percent shooting on three-pointers. Yeah, shooting percentages don't technically matter in a FanDuel format, but they do tell us about the player. In this case, they show us that MCW has been horrific since arriving in Milwaukee. Not surprisingly, his numbers, at minutes, have begun to fall as well. He's playing just 26.4 minuter per game over his last five, and averaging 9.6 points and 5.0 assists. If he cost $4,000, he'd be a good buy. That, however, is not the case.
The Atlanta Hawks: Here's the deal: The Hawks have clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and have no chance at catching Golden State for the best record in the league, or falling behind any other team in the Western Conference, meaning ... It's time to give players rest. Atlanta's head coach, Mike Budenholzer, comes from San Antonio, so we safely guess how he feels about the need to give his stars some nights off. Atlanta is going to be in cruise control over the couple of weeks. You want no part of that.
Brandon Knight, G, Suns: There's just nothing to like here. For one, Knight has been dealing with an ankle injury over the past few weeks that has kept him out of some games. And when he has been on the court he's struggled, too. He's averaging 13.4 points and 4.5 assists in 11 games with the Suns. Phoenix is also pretty much eliminated from the playoffs as well, so it wouldn't come as a surprise if Knight spend the majority of the season's remaining games sitting on the bench.
Other Notables
Don't laugh, but the Lakers are a great place to look if you need some cheap options. Ryan Kelly is now getting minutes, and shots, at power forward, while Jeremy Line and Jordan Clarkson -- the team's new starting backcourt-- have actually been playing well of late. You can see here what they've done over their last five games. The Nuggets are also doing some funky things with resting players and stuff like that, so be wary about going with anyone from Denver. Anthony Davis against a Lakers team giving power forward minutes to Ryan Kelly? Yes, please!
