JaVale McGee won’t be signing with the Celtics after all

The two sides couldn’t agree on a contract, reneging an agreement the 27-year-old and the team reportedly made.

JaVale McGee will not be coming to the Boston Celtics after all. The two sides could not agree on a contract, according to Steve Bulpitt of the Boston Herald. The dispute was over whether the second year would be a player or team option, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

The news come after reports reports indicated the two sides reached a deal. McGee was waived by the 76ers after being traded to Philadelphia by the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets traded Nene to the Wizards to acquire McGee and then signed him to a four-year, $44 million contract on 2012-13 based on his athleticism and upside. When he didn't pan out, they dumped him on the 76ers at this year's traded deadline along with a first-round pick. McGee, who had a year left on his contract after this season, originally said he wanted to stay in Philadelphia and mentor the young players. But as the deadline for eligibility for the playoffs drew near, the 76ers elected to waive him.

McGee has been plagued by injuries, so it’s hard to assess his growth as a player. He has always been a great shot blocker thanks to his huge wingspan and athleticism, but has a tendency to chase every shot in his vicinity, which often leaves him out of rebounding position.

McGee’s career per game stats are 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks on 19.9 minutes.
