As for what we're going to be doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap that way and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Friday, March 6. Thursday night is generally a slower one in the NBA, while Fridays are always packed. So with that, let's get started.
3 Players to target
Mo Williams, G, Hornets: As has been written about in previous columns, Williams has been on fire since being acquired by Charlotte. In seven games with the team he's averaging 21.6 points, 8.9 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals as he's filled in for the injured Kemba Walker. We always knew Williams could score -- after all, this is a guy who went for 52 points in a game earlier this year -- but it's been his passing that has been really impressive. On Wednesday, Williams had a 14-assist game. The 8.9 assists per game he's averaging in Charlotte is nearly four more than his career average of 5.0. Why does this all matter? Because it means that Williams is now capable of contributing to your fantasy lineup even when he has an off-shooting night. That's what makes him so valuable now. Also, he's playing the Raptors Friday, a team that has often struggled with stopping opposing guards.
Rudy Gobert, C, Jazz: Gobert continues to put up monster numbers since Utah decided to hand him the keys to the center position and ship Enes Kanter out to Oklahoma City. In the six games since that trade, Gobert is averaging 11.7 points, 14.3 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 1.0 steal in 33.7 minutes. Those are elite center numbers -- and FanDuel has yet to raise Gobert's price. Even better: On Friday Gobert and the Jazz will face the Sixers, who are allowing opposing centers to score a league-high 47.7 FanDuel points per game, according to Rotoworld. In a daily fantasy format, no one is ever a guarantee. But in this case, Gobert comes pretty close.
Kenneth Faried, F, Nuggets: It's amazing what a new coach can do for a player. Faried, we know, wasn't exactly a favorite of Brian Shaw's, and he certainly didn't love playing for him. Shaw, however, is now gone. The Nuggets have played two games with interim coach Melvin Hunt at the helm. Faried has grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked two shots in each of those contests. In one, he went for 18 points; the other, he went for 14. That's a far cry from the 11.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 0.7 blocks he's averaging on the season. Funny what happens when a player feels wanted and starts putting in effort. Faried's Friday night matchup against the Spurs isn't a great one. But, for the amount he'll cost, it shouldn't matter.
3 Players to avoid
Tobias Harris, F, Magic: A right knee injury has sapped Harris' ability to play at the level he's capable of. Over his last five games he's averaging 11.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting a measly 39 percent from the field. Harris had been playing great prior to hurting his knee, but until he shows the ability to once again perform at that near-All-Star level, he's a stay away.
Jordan Hill, F, Lakers: The hope, from a fantasy standpoint, was that Hill would be one of the Lakers picking up some of the points that Kobe Bryant left behind. That has not happened. Over his last three games Hill is averaging 12.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting a pathetic 39 percent from the field. Again, not what was expected. Making matters worse for him Friday is the Lakers are playing the Grizzlies, one of the best defensive teams in the league. Memphis is holding opposing forwards to 36.4 FanDuel points per game (via Rotoworld). Only five teams are allowing them to score less.
Dirk Nowitzki, F, Mavericks: When you get to a certain age, playing in back-to-backs becomes a tough proposition. At 36, with tons of miles on his legs, Nowitzki is at that age. The Mavericks play the Blazers Thursday night and the Warriors on Friday night -- not exactly an east stretch. Also, Nowitzki has been struggling of late, shooting just 42 percent in his last five games and scoring just 12.8 points. Nowitkzi is an all-time great, and a future Hall of Famer. None of that matters from a fantasy perspective, though. At this point, there's no reason he should be on any FanDuel teams.
Other Notables
Nikola Mirotic has scored 29 and 23 points in his last two games, respectively. With Derrick Rose out the Bulls need the offensive firepower they can get. Mirotic might end up being one of the men tasked with filling that role... Marc Gasol against the hapless Lakers, a team allowing opposing centers to score 47.3 FanDuel points per game (via Rotoworld), the second highest number in the league? Yes, please!... Isaiah Canaan went for 31 points on Wednesday. No, that doesn't mean he's figured things out, but it does show us that he's capable of putting up numbers in Philadelphia.
