As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 22. So with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
James Harden, SG, Rockets: As sure a bet as there is in the playoffs right now. In Game 1, the Mavericks tried to take away his drive and forced him to share the ball. Harden had no problem doing so and racked up 11 assists to go along with his 24 points. He also got to the line 17 times. Dallas has no one who can match up with Harden and is going to have to make a choice: let Harden get his and lock down the rest of the Rockets, or try to wall off the paint and force Harden's teammates to make shots. Either way, we know Harden is going to put up numbers. He should be the first guy you select Tuesday night.
Paul Pierce, SF, Wizards: Pierce is currently listed at $4,000 for his Tuesday night game against the Raptors. That's a great price, and one you should be looking to take advantage of. He went 7-of-10 from the field in Game 1 and finished with 20 points. In four games against Toronto this year, Pierce is averaging 16 points and shooting 53 percent from the field. You can't fill out your entire roster with guys like James Harden and Anthony Davis. Make Pierce, who plays Tuesday night, your low-cost play.
Mike Conley, PG, Grizzlies: Below you're going to see a bunch of point guards who you should be avoiding. Conley is the man you should be targeting. Damian Lillard can't guard anyone. In Game 1, it was Beno Udrih who took advantage of Portland's porous perimeter defense (he had 20 points), but it's not like Conley did nothing. He had 16 points and had the ball in his hands most of the game. In Game 2 on Wednesday, that could translate into a big box score.
3 players to avoid
Chris Paul, PG, Clippers: This is a hunch, and a bet on Gregg Popovich and the Spurs. Paul torched San Antonio in Game 1; he finished with 32 points, six assists and seven rebounds. So why should you avoid him Wednesday night? The bet here is that Pop makes some sort of adjustment to take Paul away. Maybe he traps every high pick-and-roll. Maybe he sics Kawhi Leonard on Paul. Maybe he puts the longer Danny Green on him. Whatever he decides, it would come as a surprise if the ailing Tony Parker is the player who draws the assignment once again.
Damian Lillard, PG, Blazers: Game 1 was an ugly one for the Blazers' All-Star point guard. Lillard connected on just 5 of his 21 field goal attempts and missed all six of his shots from behind the arc. He finished with just 14 points and three assists. In five games against the Grizzlies this season, Lillard is now shooting 37 percent. Mike Conley has the foot speed to bother him up top and the hands and intellect to make every move Lillard makes difficult. And of course there's Marc Gasol down low, possibly the best interior defender in the league. Life's not going to be getting easier for Dame this series. You'll want nothing to do with him Wednesday night.
Kyle Lowry, PG, Raptors: Lowry was mentioned as a player to avoid in the weekend version of this column, and that prediction proved correct. He had just seven points and four assists (though he did pull down eight rebounds) in Game 1 against the Wizards. Washington is a good defensive team with one of the best perimeter defenders in the league in John Wall, who was tasked with guarding Lowry in Game 1. There's no reason to believe that Washington will change its strategy for Game 2 Tuesday night. With that being the case, Lowry becomes a player to avoid.
Other Notables
If the Spurs take away Paul, someone else on the Clippers will have to step up. That person could be either J.J. Redick or Jamal Crawford. The bet here would be on Crawford, who went for 17 in Game 1 ... Be wary about breaking the bank on Kyrie Irving. Yeah, he went for 30 in Game 1, but Boston has some excellent perimeter defenders (Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart) who should do better against him in Game 2 ... Kyle Korver scored 21 points for the Hawks in Game 1, and there's no reason to believe he won't be able to replicate that Wednesday night. The Nets don't have the bodies, or defensive discipline, to stick with him on all those off-ball screens.
