As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24. So with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
John Wall, PG, Raptors: Wall exploded in Game 2, as he scored 26 points and dished out 17 assists against the hobbled and slow-footed Raptors. In five games this season against Toronto, Wall is now averaging 18.6 points, 10.4 assists and 4.4 rebounds. Defense has been an issue for the Raptors all year -- their defensive rating of 104.8 was the eighth worst number in the league -- and the situation has only gotten worse with the already banged up Kyle Lowry suffering a shin contusion in Game 2. Toronto has no answer for Wall. His box score from Game 3 Friday night will prove it.
Dryamond Green, SF, Warriors: Green is the guy to get if you want to shop for some second-tier studs. He's averaging 14.5 points, 12 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals in his two playoff games against the Pelicans. A major reason Green has been able to put up these numbers is because Golden State needs him on the floor. He's the only player on the roster who can even bother Anthony Davis, and so, Steve Kerr has played the Defensive Player of the Year runner-up 42 minutes per game this series. Kerr will likely stick with this strategy in Game 3 Thursday night, making Green an excellent, and very safe, play.
Norris Cole, PG, Pelicans: Another player worth picking up because of what he can do on the defensive end of the floor. Cole has been great this series against probable-MVP Stephen Curry, bothering him in a way few players can. Recognizing this, Monty Williams has played Cole nearly 31 minutes per game. Jrue Holiday and Tyreke Evans being injured has helped Cole see the floor more as well. He won't wow you with his numbers, but 9.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game -- Cole's averages -- for $3,800 -- Cole's price -- will make him worth the flyer.
3 players to avoid
Tony Parker, PG, Spurs: Something is clearly wrong with Parker, who has looked, well, very average in two games against the Clippers. His numbers: 14.4 points, 4.9 assists and just 29 minutes per game. Patty Mills was on the floor for crunch time in Game 2, as Parker has yet to show any signs of life. Until he does, stay away.
Kyle Lowry, PG, Raptors: This is getting repetitive, but for a reason. Lowry has just been awful so far against the Wizards. He's averaging just 6.5 points (!) and 4.0 assists per game, and shooting an atrocious 25 percent from the field. Also, as mentioned above, he's far from healthy. Going up against John Wall and the stingy Wizards defense, which has held Lowry to 12.4 points, 5.4 assists and 38 percent shooting in five games this season, is clearly a difficult task for the Raptors guard.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, SF, Bucks: The Greek Freak has had trouble adjusting to the playoffs and the type of defense it brings out of teams. In two games against the Bulls he's averaging 9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks. Yeah, the full box score is nice, but for $6,500 -- Antetokounmpo's current FanDuel price -- you need more than 25 percent shooting from the field. Against the Bulls, there's a good chance that won't happen.
Other Notables
With Rajon Rondo banished from the Mavericks lineup, J.J. Barea becomes the man to target. He had 12 points and four assists in 21 minutes in Game 2, and is a favorite of Rick Carlisle's... If you go cheap at point guard with a guy like Cole and are looking to break the bank on a star, take Blake Griffin. He's been a beast so far these playoffs, a player who the Spurs have been unable to guard. His averages through two games: 27.5 points, 12 rebounds, 8.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks... Another stud worth targeting: Dwight Howard. In two games this playoffs he's averaging 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks -- and the only reason the numbers are that low is because he got in foul trouble in Game 1. The Mavericks have no answer for Howard, or really any Houston player (Josh Smith is a good target, too).
