As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Tuesday, April 28 and Wednesday, April 29. So with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
J.J. Barea, PG, Mavericks: Right now Barea is listed at $4,500, which makes him the best play of the day. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle inserted Barea into the starting lineup for Game 4 -- in place of the banished Rajon Rondo and the impotent Raymond Felton -- and the diminutive point guard responded with 17 points and 13 assists in 36 minutes of playing time. Oh, and Dallas finally won a game, mainly because Barea was on the floor. He's got a net rating of 22.9 this series against the Rockets, the highest mark on the team among Mavericks who have played more than two minutes, per NBA.com. The playing time will be there Tuesday night in Game 5. The numbers likely will, too.
Damian Lillard, PG, Blazers: Lillard has really struggled this series against the Grizzlies. Well, every Blazer had been struggling, at least until the team's Game 4 win. The difference there was that Mike Conley was out, which freed up Lillard on the offensive end. Portland's All-Star point guard responded with a monster 32-point, seven-assist performance. He still struggled with his jump shot a bit, going just 1-of-5 from deep, but with Conley out the Grizzlies are now down a defender on the perimeter. Dame should be able to take advantage.
Brook Lopez, C, Nets: Deron Williams' Game 4 performance, rightfully, is getting all the attention, but Lopez continues to be the man carrying the Nets. He's averaging 21.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per game against the Hawks and shooting an impressive 54 percent from the field. He's even getting to the foul line, shooting seven free throws a game. The Hawks, clearly, have no answer for the Nets' 7-footer. That translates into FanDuel gold.
3 players to avoid
Deron Williams, PG, Nets: Don’t fall for it. Yeah, Williams had 35 points (!) in Game 4. You know how many he had total in the three games prior? 18. This is the player Williams has become. Every now and then he’ll show a flash of the point guard he used to be, only to follow that up with a performance that reminds everyone that, well, he’s no longer good. Williams’ Game 4 performance is going to cause his Wednesday price to soar. The chances of him rewarding owners who have faith in him are very low.
Al Horford, PF, Hawks: Not only has Horford been unable to defend Brook Lopez, but he's also failed to hold his own on the offensive end of the floor. The All-Star is averaging just 12.0 points and 9.5 rebounds this series while shooting a putrid 43 percent from the field. Horford's dropoff has been a major reason why the Hawks now find themselves in a best-of-three series with the eight-seeded Nets. It's hard to know what exactly is going on here, but in the meantime you want to stay away.
Austin Rivers, PG, Clippers: Rivers is going for $3,600, which makes him so tempting, even if you don't fully believe in his Game 4 outburst. The thing is, well, Rivers stinks. Everyone except his father knows this. So yeah, you can spend $3,600 on him and pray for another surprising performance, but you'd just be throwing funds away. Save that money, and spend it on someone who's actually good at basketball.
Other Notables
If you're looking for a stud to build around, go with Blake Griffin. He might be playing the best ball of his career right now, as the Spurs clearly have no answer for him. Griffin's series averages: 22.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.3 blocks, 1.3 steals ... DeMarre Carroll, normally a defensive specialist, is a good low-cost option. He's averaging 15.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists against the Nets. That he's shooting 43 percent from deep means he'll be kept on the floor ... Dwight Howard has been a beast against the Mavericks -- he's averaging 16.3 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.8 blocks -- and is only going for $7,600 on Tuesday night. He should definitely be your center.
