As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Friday, April 10. Thursday night is generally a slower one in the NBA, while Fridays are always packed. So with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
Kawhi Leonard, SF, Spurs: No one in the league is playing better than the Spurs' new star. Over his last five games Leonard is averaging 20.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3.4 steals. Incredibly, he's putting these numbers up despite playing just 25.2 minutes per game. Oh, and he's also shooting 63 percent (!) from the field. In terms of those low minutes -- that's happening because the Spurs are blowing opponents out, not because Pop is keeping Kawhi on the bench. On Friday the Spurs plays the Rockets, a team that should give San Antonio a good game. That could mean more minutes for Leonard, which could mean major stats.
Kyrie Irving, PG, Cavaliers: This is pretty simple. Wednesday night LeBron "hinted" that he might be taking the Cavaliers' next two games off. That, of course, means it's Kyrie Irving's time to shine. Remember that 55 point game he had back in late January against the Blazers? Well that came with LeBron on the bench. Irving will be playing the Celtics on Friday, a team he's shooting 53 percent against in two games this season. That Boston is allowing opposing point guards to average 42.3 FanDuel over its last 10 games, the sixth-highest number in the league, per Rotoworld, only makes this game more enticing.
Deron Williams, PG, Nets: Look who's found the fountain of youth. Williams, suddenly, is playing like the Deron Williams of old, the player that many used to consider the best point guard in the league. He's averaging 20.2 points, 9.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds in his last five games, as the Nets continue to battle for a playoff spot. Assuming his price doesn't shoot up, you won't find many better FanDuel plays than Williams.
3 players to avoid
Giannis Antetokounmpo, SF, Bucks: No one really knows what's going on here, but you don't want any part of it. Giannis was benched by Jason Kidd on Wednesday, only no one knows why (Kidd wouldn't say). It could be that this was just a one-game thing. But until we know for sure you don't want to be spending money on the Greek Freak, even if he is playing the Knicks on Friday.
Jeremy Lin, PG, Lakers: Don't fall for this trap. Yeah, the Lakers are pretty much tanking and giving all their scrubs playing time, and yeah, one would think that such a situation would be the sort of thing that Jeremy Lin could take advantage of. The problem with that line of thinking is, well, Jeremy Lin kind of stinks. He's averaging just 8.5 points and 2.5 assists in his last five games. The moral of this story: keep away from Jeremy Lin.
Eric Gordon, SG, Pelicans: The Pelicans are playing well, but Gordon doesn't have much to do with it. He's averaging just 14.6 points on 40 percent shooting, and 2.6 assists over his last five games. Also, New Orleans is pretty much at full health now, which means Gordon is no longer finding the ball in his hands on every possession. On Friday you're better off either spending money on a more expensive shooting guard, or saving your money and taking a flyer on a low-cost guy.
Other Notables
Deron Williams is mentioned above, but he's not the only Nets player worth targeting. Brook Lopez has been a monster of late, averaging 24 points and 10 rebounds in his last five games. There are two good plays on the Mavericks, who will face the leaky Nuggets defense on Friday. J.J. Barea, who could get the nod at point guard if Rajon Rondo, as expected, sits out. Also, with Rondo out, and Chandler Parsons likely joining him, the chances are pretty high that Monta Ellis finds the ball in his hands most of the night.
