This is not how the series was supposed to look. The Hawks were supposed to be the hot-shooting, ball-moving, five-is-better-than-one scoring machine. The Cavaliers were supposed to be a three-headed monster built around the dribble penetration of LeBron James and Kyrie Irving and the floor spacing of Kevin Love and the Princeton-style offense of head coach David Blatt.
Cavaliers vs. Hawks, 2015 NBA playoffs: Time, TV schedule and live stream for Eastern Conference Finals Game 1
Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals kick off on Wednesday. Here’s everything you need to know.
Instead, the Eastern Conference Finals, which begin Wednesday night in Atlanta, features two depleted teams who look nothing like they planned. The Cavaliers are without Kevin Love and now it’s unclear what shape Kyrie Irving will be in this series. His entire lower is essentially broken. Cleveland has responded with lots of LeBron James isolations. The team’s scoring, but not efficiently.
But the Hawks have their own problems. Paul Millsap is clearly banged up; that shoulder injury has slowed him down. Kyle Korver is shooting just 39 percent from behind the three-point line after hitting 49 percent of his three-point shots during the regular season. That 39 percent would be considered low for shows just how deadly a shooter Korver is. But if they're going to beat the Cavaliers, the Hawks are going to need more from their wing gunner.
Atlanta has recently found success by putting the ball in Al Horford's hands. Horford has been excellent all postseason, averaging 15.6 points. 9.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists, and those numbers went up in the second round against the Wizards. He's also made numerous big plays for Atlanta. And yet, the Hawks offense has still struggled during the postseason. The team is scoring just 102 points per 100 possessions; during the regular season that number was 106.2, per NBA.com.
So here we are: a battle between two banged up teams for an NBA Finals birth. What the plan was no longer matters. All that does is figuring out how to pull off four more wins. Wednesday night we'll get our first glimpse of what that might look like for both the Hawks and the Cavaliers.
