As for what we're doing in this space: The goal here will be to direct your attention toward some players who you might not otherwise consider. If you're here and reading this, then you already know that LeBron James is really good. But when filling out a roster you can't just pick out stars. You'll blow your cap and get stuck praying to the basketball gods that a guy like Kosta Koufos gets into the game. No, if you want to win, you have to take advantage of certain matchups -- and in order to do that you have to know where to look. That's what we're here for. Also, this space is going to be used to give you advice for the games on Friday, May 7, Saturday May 8 and Sunday, May 9. So, with that, let's get started.
3 players to target
Ramon Sessions, PG, Wizards: This is, obviously, dependent on John Wall being forced to remain on the bench with that left wrist injury. If Wall is forced to miss additional games, Sessions becomes an excellent FanDuel play. He had 21 points, four assists and three rebounds while taking Wall's place in the Wizards' starting lineup in Game 2. Better yet, he played 39 (!) minutes. The latter number is the one that matters most. If Wall is out, Sessions is going to play. And if Game 2 is any indication he's going to play well.
Tristan Thompson, PF, Cavaliers: Thompson was inserted into the Cavaliers' starting lineup in Game 2. He played 34 minutes and only scored five points, but he did pull down 12 rebounds. The boards will come no matter what, but chances are if Thompson continues to see big minutes -- and against the Bulls' large frontline, he will -- the points and some other numbers will follow as well. Thompson won't cost a lot and will be one of the better mid-cost FanDuel options available this weekend.
DeMarre Carroll, SF, Hawks: Mr. 20-points continued his streak in Game 2. Carroll is now averaging 18.9 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game in the playoffs. He's also scored at least 20 points in six straight games. The Hawks' offense has been a bit stagnant this postseason, but Carroll continues to play the best basketball of his career. He'll likely go for around $7,500 this weekend, which makes him a great play.
3 players to avoid
Klay Thompson, SG, Warriors: Thompson was bad in Game 2 against the Grizzlies as he has all year. He hit just six of his 15 shots from the field, just one of his six three-point attempts, scored just 13 points and also coughed the ball up five times. None of this was fluky, either. Yeah, Thompson missed a few open looks, but the real cause of his struggles appeared to be Tony Allen, who the Grizzlies stuck on Thompson. Allen never gave Thompson any room to breathe, or shoot. Assuming Allen keeps that assignment in this weekend's games, you'll want to stay away from Thompson.
Joakim Noah, C, Bulls: Noah's struggles continue. He had just four points, seven assists and four rebounds in Game 2 against the Cavaliers. He's now averaging 5.4 points. 10.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists this postseason and shooting just 43 percent from the field, and loosing playing time to Taj Gibson, Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic. Tom Thibodeau, apparently, has finally broken his big man.
Jeff Teague, PG, Hawks: John Wall sat out Game 2 -- and Teague still struggled. He was just 3-of-12 from the field and had nine points, though he did dish out eight assists and grab seven rebounds. Still, Teague should be able to do more against the likes of Ramon Sessions, not a man considered a defensive stalwart. Teague has struggled all postseason -- he's shooting just 36 percent. Until he turns that around you want to stay away.
If Chris Paul sits out Game 3, ignore Austin Rivers and go with Jamal Crawford instead. Crawford has scored 40 points in the two game's the Clippers have played without Paul this series. No reason to believe that won't continue if Paul is forced to miss more time. He pulled his groin in Game 2, but if he doesn't miss any time Iman Shumpert is a great mid-level play. He's hit eight of the 17 three-pointers he's attempted this postseason as the Cavaliers have relied on him to space the floor. Otto Porter has found himself this postseason. He's averaging 10.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.
