Danny Ferry's time with the Hawks will officially come to an end soon. New ownership will let Ferry go and promote Mike Budenholzer to serve in a dual role as head coach and president of basketball operations, reports Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
Hawks will officially part ways with Danny Ferry soon, according to report
Ferry, who has been on a leave of absence all season, will be released as soon as new ownership is able to do the deed. Mike Budenholzer will officially become president of basketball operations as well as the team’s coach.

The new ownership group that recently purchased the team will make the changes as soon as the rules allow it on June 26. Budenholzer, who served in Ferry’s role as he was on a hiatus this year, will become an official part of the front office instead of just holding an interim position. Wes Wilcox, Ferry’s assistant, will become general manager. Ferry, who has been on leave all season long, will be fired.
Ferry made some racially-charged remarks regarding then-free agent Luol Deng on an internal communication with front office personnel and part of the ownership group, which leaked to the media. An internal investigation followed, resulting in Ferry going on leave and majority owner Bruce Levinson being forced to sell the team after compromising internal memos were made public.
Despite the initial outrage about Ferry’s comments, he received support from people around the league, with even Deng going on record saying he didn’t think Ferry was racist. Wojnarowski notes that he will likely work again in a front office in some capacity.
Budenholzer, who won Coach of the Year after leading the Hawks to a 60-22 record, also finished third in the voting for Executive of the Year.
