2015 NBA Draft results: Jordan Mickey picked by Boston Celtics
The second LSU player to go on the night will head to a team that is losing an LSU player.
The Boston Celtics have selected Jordan Mickey with the 33rd pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. The former LSU power forward is making the jump to the NBA after making the SEC All-Conference team in his sophomore year.
After a very good freshman season, Mickey proved he was a force on the defensive end for the Tigers, averaging over three blocks per game. He was a presence in the glass as well, with almost 10 rebounds on 35 minutes per game in his second year with the program. Mickey and Jarell Martin combined to give the Tigers a powerful inside game that led them to the tournament for the first time since 2009.
Mickey was limited by a shoulder injury but was still able to contribute 12 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks in LSU’s first round loss to NC State. It was expected he would consider returning for his junior year to raise his stock by playing next to five-star recruit Ben Simmons, but he decided to forego his eligibility and enter the draft despite facing skepticism about how his skill set would translate to the NBA.
Mickey was the second player in LSU’s frontcourt to be drafted, but he might be sliding into a better situation. Mickey would seem to be a clean replacement for former LSU player Brandon Bass, set to leave the Celtics in free agency, and while he won’t change the fortunes of the franchise by himself, Boston’s far enough away from contending for championships that no one draft pick needs to do so.
