NBA Draft results 2015: Andrew Harrison picked by Phoenix, traded to Memphis
The 6’5 point guard is headed to Memphis.
Andrew Harrison has been drafted with the No. 44 pick by the Phoenix Suns, but he’ll head to Memphis in a trade. He’s the fifth Kentucky Wildcat to be selected so far. The point guard was one of college basketball’s more divisive figures before making the jump to the pros.
Andrew was considered a top-five recruit after high school, while his brother Aaron ranked in the top 10. Together they were supposed to take the NCAA by storm and lead Kentucky to an undefeated run on their freshman year. Instead, the Wildcats underwhelmed during the regular season. Andrew in particular struggled, shooting 36 percent from the field and having an assist-to-turnover ratio of just 1.4, disappointing stats for a point guard with his size advantage. Kentucky made the championship game that year thanks to a string of clutch performances by Aaron, but lost to Connecticut.
In his sophomore season, Harrison improved marginally, shooting 38 percent from the floor and posting and assist-to-turnover ratio of over two. It still wasn’t enough to live up to the hype, but with a stacked roster featuring Karl-Anthony Towns and Willie Cauley-Stein, the Wildcats went undefeated in the regular season, won their conference and advanced to the Final Four. They then lost to Wisconsin despite Harrison’s 13 points and four assists.
In his two years in Lexington, Andrew showed flashes of potential, but never became the star he was billed as coming out of high school. Still, he was a stable presence in running two Final Four offenses in two years at Kentucky, and his size at point guard only stands to help him at the next level.
