Smooth move, Clippers.

Good morning. Our last NBA newsletter of the week has the latest in free agency and more.

Good morning. Let’s basketball.

ALL HAIL THE BIG MEN: Jesus Gomez takes stock of the most high-profile rookies at Summer League. Two of the top big men lived up to the early hype. The Lakers’ big addition has not.

LAST MEN STANDING: A list of the top 10 free agents still around.

SMOOVE MOVE: Josh Smith joins the Clippers. This is a funny move because it looks like a sneaky good move at the minimum salary. When DeAndre Jordan was still going to Dallas and Smith was rumored for L.A., it looked horrible because you knew they’d try a Smith-Blake Griffin frontcourt. Context is everything!

JEFF HORNACEK AIN’T NOTHIN’ TO BE MESSED UP: Losing to the Suns coach at table tennis.

THE NATURE OF HOPE IN PHILADELPHIA: Good essay from Michael Levin on how Sam Hinkie’s asset diversification means that hope doesn’t all belong in one player’s basket, and as such the Joel Embiid injury news isn’t as crushing as it may seem.

BRUSHBACK: Michele Roberts, head of the players’ union, brushed back Adam Silver on his Tuesday comments about the teams still losing money.

YEP: Neil Paine has an inventive new way to show us that it’s still true that the best NBA players are massively underpaid relative to their peers.

NEAT: ABC will broadcast eight Saturday night showcase games this season instead of doing Sunday double-headers. (They will still have Sunday games most weeks after the NFL season ends.) Something had to give because ABC’s Sunday NBA ratings have been pretty poor.

Happy Friday. See you next time, my friends.
