We're almost at the end of July and NBA free agency is winding down. Most teams have used all their cap space and there are few high-quality free agents left on the board. However, there are still some useful players available.
Here are the top 10 NBA free agents that still aren’t signed
It’s nearly August and the pickings are getting slim.
Tristan Thompson and J.R. Smith remain on the market, although most expect them to ultimately return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Smith is more of a question mark, but it's hard to see him getting a deal to his liking from anybody else at this point.
Besides that, the remaining available players can provide depth for prospective suitors. Here’s our list of the top 10 free agents remaining based on Tom Ziller’s comprehensive June rankings. (The player’s original ranking is in parentheses.) You can also see our comprehensive list of deals to date.
1. Tristan Thompson (17)
Thompson and the Cavaliers were reportedly on the verge of agreeing to a five-year deal worth around $80 million on the first day of free agency, but that deal never came to fruition and the two sides have been at an impasse ever since. The Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers are the two teams with cap space that could force Cleveland's hand with an offer sheet, although the Cavaliers would presumably match. Thompson has the option of signing the one-year qualifying worth $6.78 so he could become an unrestricted free agent next summer when the cap jumps, but it's hard to see Cleveland letting the situation get to that point and he may not want to take that risk anyway.
2. J.R. Smith (51)
Smith opted out of his $6.4 million contract for next year, but he wasn’t able to find a new deal and continues to be in talks with Cleveland. At this point, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he took a similar one-year deal from the Cavaliers so he can be a free agent again in 2016.
3. Dorell Wright (56)
Wright saw limited playing time in his two seasons in Portland and had last year cut short by a hand injury. However, he shot 38 percent from three last year and is a career 36.5 percent shooter from long range, so he can provide some value on a cheap deal.
4. Andre Miller (64)
There doesn’t appear to be a spot for Miller in Sacramento. He turned 39 in March and is just about at the end of the road, but perhaps some team scoops him up to provide some veteran leadership.
5. Jason Terry (66)
Terry is rumored to be close to re-signing with the Houston Rockets, although it's no sure thing. The 37-year-old enjoyed a bounce-back 2014-15 campaign after a tough season with the Brooklyn Nets, shooting 39 percent from three in Houston and seeing significant playing time in the playoffs.
6. Norris Cole (70)
Cole played well in New Orleans after coming over from the Miami Heat, putting up nearly 10 points per game and shooting a tick under 38 percent from long range. He's just 26 years old and is a nice player to have coming off the bench. The Sixers have some interest in an offer sheet, but it's unclear how much they're willing to offer.
7. Kevin Seraphin (76)
Seraphin was a nice contributor off the bench for the Washington Wizards these past few years, and the 25-year-old will be a nice bargain wherever he signs. The 6'10 big man could still end up back with the Wizards, although there'd have to be some roster maneuvering to make it happen.
8. Glen Davis (88)
The Los Angeles Clippers made plenty of additions to bolster their bench this offseason, but Big Baby could still be brought back to add even more depth.
9. Reggie Evans (103)
Evans is 35 years old and has played 101 games over the last two years. He remains a strong rebounder, but isn’t an offensive threat. Like Miller, perhaps a team grabs him to add a veteran presence to the locker room.
10. Henry Sims (107)
The Sixers didn’t give Sims a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. He was quietly productive in Philadelphia the past year and a half, so some team should take a flyer on the 25-year-old big man.
