Mikhail Prokhorov breaks his vow to marry after Nets fail to win title

The Nets’ owner promised he’d get married if the Nets didn’t win a title in five years. Five years have passed ... and Prokhorov still isn’t getting married.

When Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov bought the team in 2010, he vowed to get married if the team failed to win an NBA championship within five years. Five years have passed, Brooklyn is still without a title and Prokhorov remains one of Russia's most prominent bachelors.

He even admitted he’s going back on his word.

“You may remember my promise to get married if we didn’t win a championship within five years. Sadly to say, five years have passed, and today I am very happy to say that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has agreed to take the plunge in my place,” Prokhorov said in a video posted by the Nets on Tuesday. “Adam, you are much better man than me. Thank you very much, and I wish you and your new bride every happiness.”

Prokhorov was referencing Silver’s marriage to his fiancee in May.

The Nets tried hard to win a title early in Prokhorov's ownership of the team, adding expensive players like Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to end up with the highest single-season payroll -- combined player salaries and luxury tax payments -- in league history. The moves yielded a grand total of one playoff series win in three years. Thus, management blew up the roster this offseason in order to build around big man Brook Lopez.

Now, the Nets aren’t even close to a title, and Prokhorov’s “marriage or title” promise has proven to be just talk. That’s too bad. If his wedding video was half as good as this one, we’d be thrilled.
