Lakers, Lou Williams agree to 3-year, $21 million contract, per report

The reigning Sixth Man of the Year is going to Los Angeles.

Peter Llewellyn-USA TODAY Sports

Free agent guard Lou Williams has agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Lakers on a three-year, $21 million deal, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Williams spent last season in Toronto where he did what he does everywhere: score a lot with questionable efficient but a ton of heart. Assuming his typical sixth man role, Williams averaged 16 points on 40 percent shooting on his way to being named the 2015 Sixth Man of the Year. The shooting percentages are not all his fault -- Williams was the de facto bailout option whenever the Toronto offense stagnated, which it often did, and Williams often had no choice to take wild jumpers. The Raptors and Williams had mutual interest, but other teams were expected to lobby for Williams this summer, too.

Williams spent seven years with the Sixers and two more with Atlanta before settling in Toronto. We all know what he is at this point: a high volume scorer (41.6 percent career) with a dash of playmaking thrown in on the side. Williams averaged 4.2 assists one season, but barely topped two per game in Toronto.

Now 28 years old, Williams isn’t going to change much. It’s good to see him fully recovered from the ACL injury he suffered in 2013. His scoring will come with some bad shots but his explosiveness off the bench is something many teams wouldn’t have the luxury of if he played any differently.
