Kevin Durant fully cleared for Thunder training camp

OKC announced the good news on Durant’s status Wednesday.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant has been fully cleared to participate in training camp later this month, general manager Sam Presti announced at a press conference Wednesday.

“In terms of limitations, he does not have any,” Presti said, per The Oklahoman’s Anthony Slater.

That should be music to the ears of OKC fans, who have been awaiting good news on Durant’s status after a chaotic 2014-15 season was cut short by foot injuries. Now gearing up for another run with the Thunder before hitting unrestricted free agency next summer, Durant is getting back into the shape that made him one of the NBA’s best players. The first step will be joining his teammates in training camp on Sept. 29, which also happens to be Durant’s 27th birthday.

It appears Durant could have a minutes limit initially upon making his return. When asked whether Durant’s minutes would be managed as part of easing him back into action, Presti said, “That’s something [head coach] Billy [Donovan] and Kevin and our medical team will work on.”

During the 2014-15 season, Durant missed time early and appeared in just 27 games before being sidelined. The Thunder struggled badly in his absence and despite Russell Westbrook’s individual heroics, and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008-09. Now OKC has get to back to its winning ways in order to help convince Durant not leave as a free agent next summer. A big part of that will be making sure he doesn’t suffer any setbacks or get hurt again.

The good news is that Durant was one of the league’s most durable players before the foot issues. In the five years prior to his injury-riddled campaign, the forward missed just six of a possible 467 games (regular season and playoffs combined). In 2010, 2012 and 2014, Durant led all NBA players in minutes played. Even if the Thunder don’t quite push him that hard initially in his return, KD should be back to his high-scoring ways soon enough.
